Out of Ariana Grande’s (USA) nine US No.1 singles, seven have debuted at the top of the chart: “Thank U, Next” (17 November 2018), “7 Rings” (2 February 2019), “Stuck with U” (with Justin Bieber; 23 May 2020), “Rain on Me” (with Lady Gaga; 6 June 2020), “Positions” (7 November 2020), “Yes, And?” (27 January 2024) and “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” (23 March 2024).

Taylor Swift (USA) took a share of the spoils on 4 May 2024, when “Fortnight” (feat. Post Malone), the most popular track from her new studio album The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD), became the seventh of her 12 US No.1s to start at the top. She had previously debuted at No.1 with “Shake It Off” (6 September 2014), “Cardigan” (8 August 2020), “Willow” (26 December 2020), “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)” (27 November 2021), “Anti-Hero” (5 November 2022) and “Is It Over Now?” (11 November 2023).

As of 4 May 2024, Canadian rapper Drake (nine) was the only act with more No.1 debuts on the Hot 100 than Grande and Swift. Grande has made the Hot 100 with 85 tracks, 22 of which have reached the Top 10. “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)”, from the album Eternal Sunshine, was the 76th song to debut at No.1 on the Hot 100 since its inception on 4 August 1958.

Swift’s 263 Hot 100 entries – a female record – have included 59 Top 10 hits (10 of which arrived simultaneously on 4 May 2024 when, for the second time in 18 months, she occupied all 10 positions with tracks from a new studio album). “Fortnight” was the 78th song to debut at No.1 in the history of the Hot 100.
