Longest brick sculpture

Entitled "Train", the world's biggest brick sculpture cost £760,000 to build and used more than 180,000 housebricks by the time it was unveiled on 23 June 1997, yards from the spot where the world's first passenger service ran 170 years ago. The life-size structure, depicting the Mallard steam engine, is 39.62m 130ft long and was made in Darlington, Co Durham, by David Mach and a team of 20 apprentice bricklayers. (Mach, who once made a Polaris submarine out of tyres, hopes it will be a tourist attraction that rivals Traflagar Square.)
